Mathematics

At Folksworth Church of England Primary School we know that the knowledge and skills developed through Mathematics is transferrable to other areas, not only within school learning but later on in life. Mathematics is an integral part of our broad and balanced curriculum where we endeavour to ensure that children develop an enjoyment, perseverance and enthusiasm for maths that will stay with them throughout their lives and empower them into adulthood.

We believe that unlocking mathematical fluency is an essential skill for all learners and is a pre-requisite to being able to reason and solve problems mathematically. Our mathematical curriculum is delivered through practical activities, through the use of concrete materials alongside models and images and using our outdoor environment to support learning. We want our children to be able to solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately.  Arithmetic and basic math skills are practised daily to ensure key mathematical concepts are embedded and children can recall this information to see the links between topics in Maths.

We challenge our children in all areas of Mathematics to allow them to flourish as mathematical thinkers.  We aim to develop a positive culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths that produces strong, secure learning.

Calculations

At Folksworth we teach formal written methods for calculations as set out in the National Curriculum.  There are a progression of steps we work through in order to ensure pupils have full understanding of these written processes.  Please use these documents to help you support your child by using the same method with them at home.
